RECYCLING, WE'RE STUCK WITH IT OUR PLASTIC RECYCLING ISSUES All those plastic "clamshell" containers? Shrink-wrapped packages? Used sandwich bags? Greasy pizza boxes? Amazon's plastic envelopes? Juice pouches? Freezer-proof cartons? Sticky peanut butter jars? No one wants them. They're all ours now. China has imposed a 99.5% purity standard that has left us stuck with recycling exports. This has caused our recycling to fall 6% (from 50 % to 44%) and well short of our 75% recycling goal by the year 2020. So what do we do to turn this around? Well, our biggest culprit is contamination. If we can platics are soiled by foods or fluids, even just a little bit, don't throw them in your blue carts. Contaminated plastics can contaminate other recycling and sometimes entire bales or recycling. This problem is much bigger than just Yuba-Sutter (it's nationwide), but we all need to change our habits to improve our recycling.
