Paid Advertisement C-STEM Girls Camps By Tom Reusser Sutter County Superintendent of Schools Sutter County Superintendent of Schools partnered with UC Davis and Core Charter to provide C-STEM Girl camps in June. The 1-week Girls in Robotics Leadership using the UC Davis C-STEM GIRL Camp curriculum through C-STEM Studio and RoboBlockly, was focused on motivating girls in middle school through pe mentoring by college girls to learn leadership and engineering, and math (STEM) concepts through a fun and exciting robotics- based curriculum. Each camp had 20 middle school girls as camp participants, two high school girls as assistant coaches, two female college students as coaches, and one female teacher/staff as a mentor and coordinator. The girls learned teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. They met inspiring women leaders working with science and technology to gain exposure to the variety of opportunities available to them. The girls were introduced to robotics, principles of engineering, and (GIRL) camp science, technology computer programming in RoboBlockly and Ch/C/C++ with a mock-up RoboPlay Challenge also learned film production and the Competition. The girls creative process involved in making short videos with robotics in the context of a global problem. The videos can be submitted to next year's RoboPlay Video Competition. Girls visited university research labs and dined in a campus common to experience campus life. The weeks ended with student teams presenting their projects and celebration of the GIRL C-STEM is a UC approved educational preparation program for undergraduate admission for both K-12 and Community College students to all UC campuses. Participation in these girl camps are recognized in the UC admissions process as achievements that have explicitly prepared students for college and career.
