Paid Advertisement Aiding Adolescent Adults to Autonomy Superintendent Tom Reusser Sutter County Superintendent of Schools SCSOS has the privilege of serving three Adult Transition Classrooms. Housed at Feather River Academy, the students in these classrooms (ages 18-22) were able to return to a hybrid in person model on February 22. Teacher LeeAnne Martin has designed a curriculum entitled "Life University." She and her para-educator Dawn Patterson teach their students basic life skills such as resume writing, career exploration and mock interviews. Additionally, students learn necessary math skills to operate a class store, balance an ongoing budget, coupled with writing checks to pay bills. Students also plan meals, complete grocery lists, and navigate the community using the local transit system to purchase necessary goods and supplies. Teacher LaVonne Jensen, Para-educators Roberta Langley, Debbie McCarthy, Marilee Perez and Josephine Tabios use a curriculum entitled, "Unique." This curriculum is based on task analysis. It is a visual step-by-step, repetitive approach to helping their students develop practical life skills. There are fifteen different tasks that students are taught from sweeping floors to wiping down tables to washing windows. Teacher Tan Nguyen, Para-educators Josh Nieto, Rosa Fresquez-Mittendorf, and Matt Sambol also use the county adopted "Unique" curriculum and pair that with Touch Math Money. These educators cover three broad areas for their students: functional math skills, functional ELA skills and independent living skills. The students are taught money management through earning classroom dollars and keeping a ledger for expenditures. Our ATP Educators work diligently with their students to ensure that they have life skills when they graduate from the program. If you would like further information about our ATP Programs, please contact Janine Hughes, Director of Special Education at 530-822-2911 or janineh@sutter.k12.ca.us. Paid for by Sutter Co.
